What impact has Career Services had in your life?

Career Services hosted law career fairs that expanded my understanding of the different career paths that one can pursue with a law degree. After consulting with various law firms at the career fair, I gained insight into how I should upskill to align myself with my desired role and the expectations of the firm I wanted to work for.

Would you recommend Career Services to other students? Why or why not?

Definitely! Career Services is not playing around in respect of fulfilling its mandate to prepare students for the world of work. In a world where access to career development comes at a price, I commend Career Services for assisting students free of charge. Students get to draft motivational letters tailored to specific roles, they gain real-life experience preparing for job interviews, and students can access a professional wardrobe of formal interview attire, without financial burden.

What is your current occupation or job?

I am a Candidate Legal Attorney in the Dispute Resolution Group at PH Attorneys.

What do you wish you had done at university that would have better prepared you for your current role?

In retrospect, I underestimated the value of participating in vacation work. Although I was aware that it was possible to enter the job market without practical experience, I did not fully appreciate its role in equipping students for realities of practice. I now know that taking initiative to shadow industry professionals can provide you with a solid practical foundation that makes the transition less challenging.

What top three tips do you have for students and graduates entering job hunting season now?

Top three tips I can give to students and graduates entering the job-hunting season:
  • Do not limit yourself to a single area of specialization - a degree can provide you with a abroad array of potential career paths. Apply for every opportunity you are presented with without being selective. Be open-minded and do not sell yourself short!
  • Use every opportunity you are presented with to distinguish yourself from other candidates. A well-crafted curriculum vitae represents you before you even step into an interview.
  • Do not misrepresent yourself. Your motivational letter must reflect an honest account of your aspirations, values, and experiences - chances are you will be held to account for it in an interview.

What impact has Career Services had in your life?

When I was first introduced to Career Services, my views on CV writing and job searching were very outdated. I did not even have a LinkedIn account. They helped me set up my LinkedIn account and helped me create a CV that was more suitable for the current times and the jobs I was applying for, which I think played a pivotal role in me being contacted for interviews. I also had a few mock interviews with Career Services in preparation for the interviews, which helped so much with the nerves when the actual interviews came around, because I felt so much more prepared.

Will you recommend Career Services to other students? Why?

I definitely would. Unfortunately, I only found out about Career Services as an alumni, and I definitely wish I had known about it earlier.

What is your current occupation or job?

I am currently a medical scientist intern.

What do you wish you had done at university that would have assisted you more in your job today?

Firstly, I wish I had read my emails more often as a student, because then I would have been able to make use of Career Services' resources from the very beginning. I think I would have been more prepared for what happens once you graduate. Something that I now tell a lot of undergraduate/honours students to do is to volunteer in the space you want to find yourself in one day. It shows your future employer that you are serious about your career and that you are already taking steps to gain experience and skills.

What top three tips do you have for students and graduates entering job hunting season now?

  • Looking for a job becomes your job. You need to put in the effort to look for job posts and update your CV for each specific post you apply for.
  • Connect with recruiters on LinkedIn and don't be scared to contact them directly to ask for advice. Most of the time they are willing to answer your questions.
  • Rejection is part of job hunting, so the most important tip is DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED.
